An inventory you can trust
Before interpreting a vulnerability total, compare scan coverage with the devices, services and cloud workloads you expect to have. A server absent from the console is not a server with no vulnerabilities. Failed authentication and silent agents create blind spots that a tidy dashboard can conceal.
Qualys VMDR can support discovery and assessment, but scanner placement, authentication, agent health and asset identity need operational attention. Tags should identify business service, technical owner and maintenance group. Duplicate records and retired assets distort both priorities and reporting.
Priority is not a sort by CVSS
CVSS describes technical severity. Prioritisation also considers known exploitation, internet reachability, the affected business service and whether a credible attack path exists. An exposed service with a usable exploit may need attention before a higher-scoring finding isolated from normal access.
Agree escalation and remediation targets with the owners who must act on them. Threat intelligence informs the judgement; it does not prove that your organisation has been compromised. Where a patch cannot be applied immediately, document the mitigation, evidence, residual risk and review date.
The hand-off to IT is where programmes stall
A spreadsheet sent to a shared mailbox rarely produces sustained remediation. Findings need a responsible team, practical fix instructions and a route into the existing change process. Consolidate related findings into work that matches a patch window rather than creating one ticket for every detection.
Qualys Patch Management may support deployment where licensed and suitable, but jobs still need testing, approval and verification. A pending reboot, an application installed outside the managed path or a disconnected laptop can leave exposure after a job reports success. Some fixes require configuration or replacement rather than a patch.
Report reduction and what remains blocked
Report authenticated coverage, overdue priority exposure, verified closures and recurring findings. Keep totals alongside their scope so a reduction caused by lost coverage cannot look like progress. Directors need the business consequence and blocked decision; engineers need asset detail and the next action.
Use the existing managed service pages below for the delivery scope, scanning options and Qualys-specific work. Continuous monitoring and managed scanning remain part of this cluster rather than competing replacements. The programme should improve through changes to deployment baselines and ownership, not repeat the same emergency every month.
